That is the honest, non-Hollywood version of what you are buying when you buy a can.

What a suppressor actually does

Every time a gun fires, a wave of expanding gas follows the bullet out of the barrel and hits open air all at once. That sudden release is most of what makes a gunshot loud. A suppressor is a metal tube full of internal chambers, usually called baffles, that gives that gas somewhere to go before it hits open air. The gas expands, slows down, and cools inside the suppressor instead of blasting out all at once. Think of it like popping a balloon. If you poke a balloon with a pin, it changes from high pressure to low pressure suddenly, causing a large “POP”. However, if you slowly allow the pressure to change, you hear very little noise, if any.

That is the whole trick. Nothing about a suppressor stops the bullet, slows it down in a meaningful way, or changes how the gun fires. It only manages the gas.

Common suppressor myths, busted

Myth: suppressors make a gun silent. Even a top-end suppressor on a quiet caliber still produces a sound in the range of a loud clap or a nail gun, typically 110 to 120 decibels. That is a real reduction from an unsuppressed gunshot, but it is nowhere close to the near-silent movie version.

Myth: getting one costs a fortune in taxes and takes forever. The suppressor itself has never been cheap, but the federal tax that used to add $200 to every purchase is gone as of January 1, 2026. The paperwork and background check are still required, but the cost barrier that kept a lot of shooters away is no longer part of the equation.

Myth: a suppressor makes a rifle too heavy or awkward to shoot. Modern cans, especially titanium builds, add well under a pound in many cases. Shooters notice the added length more than the added weight, and most adjust to it within a range session or two.

Real benefits of shooting suppressed

Hearing protection. Cutting a gunshot from around 160 decibels down to 120 or so is the difference between immediate, cumulative hearing damage and a sound you can safely absorb for a shot or two without ear protection, though we still recommend wearing it.

Less recoil, more control. A suppressor adds forward weight and manages some of the gas that would otherwise push back against the shooter. Most shooters feel noticeably softer recoil and less muzzle rise, which makes follow-up shots faster and easier to place.

Better hunting and range etiquette. A suppressed rifle disturbs game less after the first shot and is a lot easier on the ears of everyone else at a shared range or hunting camp. It is a small change that makes a real difference for anyone shooting near other people.

Cleaner sight picture. Reduced muzzle flash and blast mean less disturbance to your sight picture between shots, which matters most in low light hunting situations or fast follow-up shots.

What a suppressor will not do:

A suppressor cannot stop the sonic crack a bullet makes when it breaks the sound barrier. That crack happens downrange of the suppressor entirely, so even the best can in the world will not quiet a supersonic crack.
